This incredible oil painting on canvas depicts Our Lady of Cocharcas under the baldachin.
In this painting stands in the center Mary under a baldachin as if for a religious procession. The figure is static, idol-like, framed with slender twisted columns decorated at the bottom with roses and with candles at the top.

The importance of the baldachin for the main figure in a procession should be mentioned, for here i have a glimpse of colonial ceremony. Such processions can still be seen, notably in Cuzco and elsewhere in the heartland of the Indian-when one statue after the other comes out of its resting place, bedecked with real and artificial flowers, borne by members of a fraternity or sodality dressed in their best. The seventeenth-century chronicler tells that the shrine of Cocharcas was among the most famous pilgrim places in South America-of which today little evidence remains.
