This magnificent oil painting on canvas depicts the Young Virgin Mary spinning.
Young Mary is seated, though awkwardly, on a 17th century-style friar's Chair. She is dressed with a little cape around her shoulders pinned with a brooch. Her halo and clothing have touches of golden leaf.

This image of the young Virgin at her tasks is rare in European art outside Spain, where its earliest appereance seems to be in a painting by Juan de Roelas. In the Viceroyalty of Peru, the image was often paired with a pendant painting showing Christ as a boy with the crown of thorns, upon which he has pricked his finger, in his lap.
