This archangel is certainly not dressed for war, rather for a ceremonial portrait. His costume seems derived from the flamboyant style of the Netherlands, as set forth in Rembrandt's The Militia Company of Captain Frams Barming Cocq (mistakenly called The Night watch) . There the garb varies from light to black, sashes from wide to narrow; the broad-brimmed hats are heavy with plumes. The portrayal indicates the start of a romanticizing style. Our figure in its picturesque extravagance is out of this world.

In this painting, the richly brocaded coat bordered with gold, the broad edgings of lace, the contrasting shades in costume and wings make for extraordinary elegance.
