About Lithium Battery Regulations:

  • Function: Lithium batteries are commonly used in electronic devices, such as cell phones, laptops, PDAs and electronic watches. In other electronic devices, lithium batteries are preferred because they have a longer life than regular alkaline batteries, yet they are used with caution due to its high voltage
  • Regulation: Lithium Cell ReplacementOn January 1, 2008, the regulation restricting the air transport of uninstalled lithium batteries in checked luggage was passed by the United States Transportation Security Administration. This prevents the transport of extra lithium batteries in the luggage that will go to the airplane's cargo areas
  • Exception: The regulation does allow the presence of extra lithium batteries in the carry-on luggage. This does not restrict the number of batteries that is packed.
