Sildenafil Citrate Description:

Sildenafil citrate, sold under Viagra, Revatio and various other trade names, is a medicament for the treatment of erectile dysfunction and pulmonary hypertension (PAH). It was originally made by Pfizer scientists David Bell, David Brown and Nikolay Twett.

The primary indication of sildenafil is the treatment of erectile dysfunction (unable to maintain a satisfactory erection to complete sexual intercourse). The currently used standard treatment methods include erectile dysfunction, including diabetes, by inhibiting cGMP-specific phosphodiesterase 5 (PDE5) to promote the regulation of penile blood flow in cGMP-degrading enzymes.

In addition to erectile dysfunction, sildenafil citrate can also be effective in rare pulmonary hypertension. It relaxes the arterial wall, leading to reduced pulmonary artery resistance and pressure. Which in turn reduces the workload of the right ventricle of the heart and improves the symptoms of right heart failure. Because PDE5 is mainly distributed in the smooth muscle of the arterial wall of the lung and penis, sildenafil has a selective effect in both regions without causing vasodilatation in other parts of the body. Pfizer submitted an additional registration of sildenafil to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which was approved for use in June 2005. The preparation was named Revatio to avoid confusion with Viagra, 20 mg tablet for white round sildenafil plus bosentan and prostacyclin treatment regimens.

Sildenafil citrate is used to treat erectile dysfunction by relaxing the muscles and increasing blood flow to the body's specific area (in this case, especially the penis). The effect lasted for up to four hours.

In addition to the treatment, sildenafil citrate can also be effective in the treatment of pulmonary hypertension (PAH). Similar to how it relaxes the muscles of the penis, it relaxes the arterial wall; therefore, reduces arterial resistance and stress.

Sildenafil citrate alone is active in relaxing muscles and increases blood flow from the heart, lungs and penis caused by PDE-5, but does not increase blood vessels in other parts of the body.
